Description

Amersfoort is a city in the middle of our country and it is a very old one. Luckily, a great many objects from ancient times still remain. Like those 'Muurhuizen' (Lit. Wall houses). Amersfoort, in the Middle Ages was enclosed by city walls. In the 14th Century there was a great need to enlarge the city. New city wall were built, the old one lost their meaning. A great deal of those walls found a new destination... they became part of houses. So.. it's therefor that I called this picture 'living in a city wall.' The picture was taken today.. very bad wheather, cold, rainy, gloomy. I changed the picture with a filter that is called 'watercolor' but in fact isn't.

I knew it :) ha ha Amersfoort.. Pracht stad Prachtige foto Of course all cities were enclosed by citywalls (oh.. except Baarn.. and 's Gravenzande (lost it's City Rights) and Noordwijk (gave back it's CityRights) In cities like Amsterdam and Maastricht the old rings of walls were brokendown and included in the new town.. this indeed happened to Amersfoort oo. Amersfoort is fantastic. Next time try to include it's canals... or the standing walls.. Together with Zwolle, Harderwijk (almost complete !!!) and Maastricht (ok and Utrecht a bit) Amersfoort -as a main city- kept much of it's original city walls.. and that is unique
