Description

Hard to believe, but...: the materials, terrain, and sky in this scene was all taken from the randomizer. All of them! Computer generated! I set where I wanted the terrain to be, the quality of the render, etc., but this is an essentially computer-generated image. I'm proud... but I'm also a little sad to have made this. One thing I never have liked about CG art is that the process requires so much tweaking and fiddling that it feels more like a product than a work of art. You can have a certain degree of quality or not... that choice sort of lends itself more to an assembly line than a field of creativity. I find this beautiful and it makes me happy to see it come from my hands, but the computer basically carried this out for me. Would you still call this art? And then that leads to the question of computers being employed in other mediums of expression... could a computer generate a symphony? Or a novel? There's something wrong, somehow, about leaving such responsibility in the 'hands' of a machine. At any rate it makes me feel uncomfortable and obsolete. Rendered in Bryce, no postwork.

Nicely done! Like you, I sometimes think that computer-generated artwork can be seen (perhaps at least by non-CG artists) as being too easy and not art at all because the computer is doing all the work. But, don't forget, it was YOU who chose to use each of those particular materials, YOU who chose where to place the terrain and YOU who chose to post your artwork for others to see. Though yours is a simple scene (which are quite often the best types anyway!), it doesn't take designing/placing many more elements into a scene, and the associated decision-making processes that entails, in order to differentiate any piece of CG as being a personal work of art from being just something a computer made. So, just rejoice in the fact that you have a medium in which you can express your imagination into art and use that medium to its fullest extent!
