Description

Acrylic on canvas, 45x45cm. Painted in three sessions in January 2007. This was a first attempt at a still life study, conducted alongside Cassie who also painted her own version. I've been learning a lot from her, particularly with building up colour in layers, which was the main focus of this exercise. This painting alone taught me a lot. My forms just need more work, as these flowers were actually tigerlilies but mine look more like poppies :p Thank you very much for taking a look and your feedback is always much appreciated indeed :-)

Poppies are good! Great vibrant colors. Highlights are super. You are doing a wonderful job, Jim, and you have a great teacher. I looking forward to seeing many more paintings from you. It is nice to take this journey with you from the beginning and what how things progress. Hugs, x:)

What I like... is the wall. The color transfer, by light... of the flower's color and form. It's like shadows, most forget there is color in shadows... and that light passing through and around objects, give that "aura" in the objects and space around them. To me, this had given the painting, even in condensed form on a monitor, more depth and life... Should really work in a real world viewing... Nice exercise, nice still life.

I must say it is a relief to be able to share with you some traditional techniques, with such talent as your's it would be a crime to leave you in the safe world of digital imagery. You never cease to amaze me and I can't wait to be dumbfounded with your next creation. hugest hugs & love

I can see you're making good use of your time over there. I probably wouldn't have guessed this was by you. Quite amazing really, the play of light on the blooms. But with a teacher like yours, together with your talent, who knows where it will lead? You show 'em, Jim!

I'm sooooo late - but you can trust me, Jim: I've never forgotten you! How could I? I love you and your art far too much!!!! ;-D This a beautiful, beautiful. I don't care if they are tigerlilies or poppies, the picture is fascinating with all that wonderful light in it. I'm so happy Cassie is there supporting you in painting with acrylics; hopefully there are and will be lots more of paintings from you! Love & hugs.

I love how you've captured warmth and sunlight so beautifully without going over the top. Also, this painting feels so . . . optimistic, so safe, compared to alot of your work. It's great to see you experimenting; I usually prefer darker, weirder stuff but you've done such a wonderful job of communicating tranquility in this piece that I can't say it's not every bit as emotionally interesting as your surrealism. Excellent work. And don't worry about your technical skill, it will get better and you've already got the feeling down pat.

The leftmost flowers have a very sharp color contrast with the background, which in spots makes them pop out unnaturally or look they have a weird yellow halo. The other potential criticism is the separation between green and white background in the upper right: I assume that this came from the real background when you painted it from life, but it does nothing to help the picture and is confusing to the eye, drawing it away from the flowers. Other than that, I think the subject was captured with great softness, restraint, and expressiveness. I am particularly fond of the way the leaves in the lower right seem to layer on top of each other, making me think of a convoluted labyrinth.
