Description

Mornin' All *S* Today's image is just my interpretation of Arthur C. Clarke's (2001: A Space Odyssey) short story The Star. To say this story is awesome would be a gross understatement. Here's a brief synopsis : Religion, and in particular religious faith, are central themes in The Star. The narrative is the interior monologue of the central character, a Jesuit astrophysicist. He is aboard a starship on a mission to investigate the causes of a supernova in a distant galaxy. He and the rest of the crew discover the artifacts of a highly developed civilization, carefully preserved on the only planet that remains in orbit around the supernova. Knowing that all life would be wiped out when their sun flared into a supernova, this race of sentient beings left a record of who they were and what they accomplished. The pictures, sculptures, music, and other relics of a very human-like race doomed to destruction depress the crew and investigating scientists, who are far from their own homes and lonely. Info courtesy of enotes.com I'm stopping here and not giving away the surprise ending hoping someone will be curious enough to read this most intriguing story. It is extremely touching and thought provoking. Y'all have a good one :o) ~ Love & Hugs ~ * Mina * Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Photo credits : stock.xchng.com

What a haunting and captivating image. It highlights your synopsis perfectly. The story actually reminds me of an episode of StarTrek:TNG...I wonder if they 'borrowed' it. Anyway, wonderful work, as always, Mina. -M :^)

Very beautiful image, Mina. I know the story, but it's been eons. I do remember this bit of the plot, but will do my homework....again! you make me work so hard. I love Clarke's works and '2001' the book, if I understand, was written as the movie was being made, with Kubrick co-authoring with Clarke. This is the movie that turned me into a movie buff and made me nuts about film and film history and the magic of film. Did you also know (I'm trying to stump you now, hehe) that Clarke's theories about a celestial body's gravitational field would 'sling-shot' spaceships around said body and was proved in the U.S. Apollo moon missions? But you prolly knew all this, you know everything! ;o) Hugz, Scott
