Description
every time i sat down to write a tutorial on what i've learned, something cool would happen. like, the Simpsons would be on or there'd be an explosion or a slut would walk by. so here's a mini-tutorial.
for that up-close nose hair realism in Inner Child there were no lights. only Atmosphere settings:
kick whoever is at your computer to the side, load up Vue.
import your sluttiest Poser model. (File, Import Object, pick your Poser file, click ok, click ok)
click the LOAD ATMOSPHERE button (at the top). under EFFECTS click OTHERS and grab the WHITE BACKGROUND atmosphere.
the button next to Load Atmosphere is the ATMOSPHERE EDITOR. click it.
under ATMOSPHERE MODEL pick STANDARD MODEL.
then go to the LIGHT tab.
under LIGHTING MODEL choose GLOBAL ILLUMINATION
on ARTIFICIAL AMBIENCE go to 1.00
in the middle, on the LIGHT BALANCE slider, slide that slider aaaaall the way over to AMBIENT. it should say 0%
uncheck the ...TO SKY AND CLOUDS box.
now adjust!
the SKY DOME LIGHTING GAIN adjusts brightness
and the AMBIENT LIGHT slider lightens and darkens shadows
and thass it, sucka. save the atmosphere. it's the button on the bottom right of the Atmo Editor. name it after me.
you can use these settings with any Atmosphere or Atmosphere model, whatever background image, it'll even make your HDRI stuff snazzier. just remember the SKY DOME LIGHTING GAIN value adjusts the brightness and some Atmospheres will change dramatically.
tip: in Inner Child i rotated the woman 90 degrees so her face was pointing toward the sky. extra illumination.
i'll type up what i learned about Rendering and HDRI and explain why this atmosphere works, gimmie a sec.
if you already know how to use HDRI, there be free light schemes here:

these dancing robots were rendered with this atmosphere with no postwork. you have questions, then ask me.
and if you have better ways of doing things, for the love of God tell me.

I love your commentaries on your images, the real (and funny) way you tell them! It's a pleasure to read them. This almost has a Claude Theberge feeling to it as far as the sense of motion in the clothing and hair goes. Very cool how their "skins" appear to be negatives of each other. I don't use Vue, but I see so many great renders coming from it that it's something I intend to eventually get. To that end, I have taken very careful note of your mini-tut for when I'm going to need this information. Thanks for the tips. :D
