Description
When I went to the coast, I stopped in La Grange (pronounced like "grain" to make bread), and actually asked for directions down a small country road to see the Chicken Ranch. There's nothing left now but ruins, on private property and this is all one can see from the road without crossing over the fence. Since I did not want to spend the night in jail, I had to stay this far back by the road. Doesn't hardly look like what you might have seen in the cheesy musical: "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas". But I wanted to be able to say I have been there and seen it.
If you are not familiar with this infamous brothel, you can read the history here.
You can see what it actually looked like in its heyday and a close up view of the ruins can be seen here,
more than halfway down the page (nothing like the two story house in the musical!).
You can read about its infamous connection with Texas A&M University here.
The song "La Grange" ... "a haw, haw, haw!", by some good ole Texas boys called ZZ Top is about this very place.
I saturated what can be seen of the ruins with orangey color, as its weathered gray boards were the same color as the trees. You can barely seen broken boards near the ground in the center of the picture. Above that is a roof. All that are left are a few ruins of what they left behind when they bought the main building and moved it to Dallas after the place was closed down, which you can read in the links above. Thanks for looking and for your comments. ...Maria

This place played a part in my first husband's family tradition... It was well known and well tolerated by most people for many, many years. We were all sad to see this part of our memory erased. Nice shot and thanks for bringing back an old memory.

Best Bio Yet! Most are boring, not many have haunted jails. I enjoyed reading it.

I never saw the movie and did not know it was based on reality, but I remember when it came out in theater. It is a lovely landscape shot, just wish that there was more of the building left to see. Well done!

Wow. That old baton twirling Marvin Zindler is still alive and has a spot on the 6 o'clock news (abc) in Houston, reporting about "Slime in the Ice Machine" of local restaurants. Cool post of whats not anymore. ;-)
