Description

Imagination is more important than knowledge - Einstein Made from a Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter terrain of the caldera in Apollinaris Patera, which is 40 degrees longitude east of Elysium Mons & 30 degrees latitude below it. This caldera (formed by the blowing away of the cone of a volcano) is of intermediate age, with basalt flows, interbedded flows, pyroclastic material and vicious lavas. Terrain conversion of this 128 bit binary file from NASA missions was done using 3DEM. Anybody interested in downloading Mars terrain files for rendering can get it from http://pds-geosciences.wustl.edu/missions/mgs/megdr.html

Actually this pic is a technical puzzle: Strata are found essentially in sedimentary rocks. Igneous material do not have strata, certainly not in a Caldera. But then isnt imagination more important than knowledge?
