Description

Ok, this is the first proper object I've modelled and rendered in LW, so be gentle. I've modelled other stuff but never uploaded here before. ;) I've been modelling this for the better part of a week. It's a model of my actual Pure One DAB radio, so it was one of those rare occasions where I didn't have to search endlessly for reference images! I'm fairly happy with the mesh, although the casing isn't quite right. I also had to resort to a texture map and bump map for the speaker. I wanted to do it in geometry but LW just couldn't handle a grid of 23x23 cylinders being subtracted from a cube. It kept hanging. Even when I found a way to do it, LW was so painfully slow when handling the resulting object, it made working on it really tedious. I really didn't want to cheat and do it with a texture map! LW let me down. I know the edges on the casing are a bit sharp, but I tried rounding them with sub-patching - which was messy because of so many ngons, and triangulating them just made it worse - and I couldn't use the Rounder tool on the case edges because they go in different directions. Anyway, I don't think there's any detail I've left out; it's one of the most detailed models I've done so far in LW. It was a lesson in modelling and texturing. And you only learn by doing, right? :) I'm still pretty green when it comes to the ins and outs, dos and don'ts of modelling, so any feedback is welcome. Cheers,

Wow! Your modelling and materials look perfect to me. It would be nice to see your radio in a brighter setting though, if that is possible. It is much too nice not to be seen fully lit. Don

Looks great to me. Nice detailed mesh and the render looks very realistic too. Very nice work indeed.

Excellent modelling ~ I'd be over the moon if I could create anything near this perfect ~ BRAVO!!!

Very nice job, its a terrific model. You definitely should join the forum you can really learn allot from everyone there and from the looks of your model could probably teach a thing or two also :)

"23x23 cylinders being subtracted from a cube"... Man, you have extreme requirements! I would never try my puter do such a job:) Actually, I stopped Boolean modeling just after finishing my first complex model, the Urchin. It creates so vast numbers of polys the machine just crashes. Regarding the radio, Im just jealious about your quality of modeling and lighting. You could write tuts how to set a presentation scene!

Dont know how you modelled the case, though next time try spline patching or even using the extender tool. If you set it up right it can be subpatched. A lot of complicated geometries can be built this way. A good effort neverless.
