Description

This image came to me recently about the fine line there is between fantasy and science fiction. In earlier times, werewolves and vampires were largly restricted within the realms of fantasy. Then in certain movies and comics, they used mutations, genetics, and viruses to explain the plausibility of them. It wouldn't be surprising till the concept of unicorns also comes down to biology. A horse with a horn hunted to extinction for their horns. But even then, how about stories by Jules Verne and H. G. Wells? Stories of fantastic voyages under the sea. Invaders from another planet. There was even a story during the time I think before UNIVAC where computation machines were no bigger than a suit case, and were connected by telegraph. Pure fantasy at the time, and yet we are using that fantasy right now as you look at the images on this site. Where demons and angels now seem to be turning into UFO's and aliens during the UFO craze back in the 90's and with the popular TV show, the X-Files.

Sometimes its just a matter of time before reality catches up with fantasy (or sci-fi). While much of the tech of the TOS of Star Trek may have been rendered obsolete and ridiculous, TNG raised the bar again, followed by its successors. Star Trek as a whole has been the inspiration for quite a bit of real world devices and ideas, which continues to this day. Trek's been around over 40 years now, with 30 seasons on TV (TOS: 3, TAS: 2, TNG: 7, DS9: 7, VOY: 9, ENT: 4), plus ten movies so far with an eleventh on the way. Not to mention all the books. Star Wars has also had its share of real world counterparts, but not nearly as much as ST. SW's been around for thirty years, over 6 movies, three spin-offs (the Ewoks movies and the Holiday Special), two animated series (Droids, Clone Wars) plus the new live action series. Plus, all the books, most of which are considered to be canon, unlike a lot of the material of Star Trek. Let's hope that some other well known material doesn't become the truth; Brave New World and 1984 come to mind first. Although, it does appear that we are heading that way in some regards. But sticking with the better known (today) sci-fi, there's alien invasions, interplanetary war and colonization to consider. Plus, we may end up being the invaders some day (see Earth 2). Who knows, maybe a decade or two from now, the stuff writers present to us may have become quite different, either through changing standards in society to the technology and knowledge of the time, or what have you. I don't read as much as I one did. Fantasy and sci-fi are still my faves, but I gotta dmit, a lot of it doesn't really compare to the older stuff. Writers like Verne, Wells, Tolkien and later masters like Clarke, Heinlein and Herbert have few equals. Plus, it's kinda fun to check out some of the lesser known stories from compilations and old magazines.

Okay, I'm guessing this is an aether-flyer, with a balloon filled with something with a lifting power greater than hydrogen. Nice steampunk concept! I like the translucency and reflectivity of the balloon. One thing-- the composition is overbalanced to the left. The aether-flyer touching the left edge of the piece would get you marks off by my long-ago instructors.
