My name? Eric den Biesen, a Canadian of Dutch ancestry. I'm 46 years young, though I sometimes feel MUCH older. I generally like to model in trueSpace, though I'm learning Carrara and Hexagon as well. Not much free time for it, so anything I'm building progresses REAL slowly. :( I like to illustrate my tales of the Imperium with Poser and/or Bryce, or that story's prequel, Siren's Song, the story of the Human/Mer first Contact. Neither story is more than outline, and bits are told through the pics I do. And because it's fun, of course. :)

Critique group: Well, hard to decide what to say for a test render because it's not clear what will be an obvious evolution or what is there to stay. But anyway, here goes my humble opinion: The fabric on the chair looks excellent, but maybe it looks outdated for a spaceship. I mean, I expected something more modern. And, of course, it lacks some kind of safety belt. That chair looks fine for an office but probably not very good on a spaceship. The black area in the upper part of the panel should be filled in with something. This is only done partially, on the left, but here the problem is different: the applied texture seems concave but the surface is flat. The black panel on the main structure should also have something in it. The blue metalic structure in the chair doesn't seem to fit the overall decor, because of being of such an intense blue. The texture on the floor seems too low resolution. I would expect some more detail on the brown panels near the floor. Maybe some cabling or pipes. That light effect in the lower left of the glass seems a bit strange but that's probably for being a test. And, of course, shadows are missing overall but that's also due to being a test, I suppose. Well, I hope I wasn't too verbose! :-)

Can't wait to see how it turns out! Think it looks incredible so far! :D

Looks very good - can't wait to see the final craft

CG Chair and panel text look good..interesting to see the final.
BAR-CODE
CG textures look OK ..the only thing i think is strange is the OUTLINE of the obj. in the scene... It looks like you did a "special kind of render" with it and for test rnders thats not good .. And maybe do a little more distance from obj.. its so close that the overall look is gone.. Like to see more and i will i think :} Chris

I'm kinda wishin the material of the metal in the ship itself was some sort of aluminum lol. Though it really does look good. I'd have to agree the chair fabric sort of reminds me of a 1980's office chair. Maybe a shiney black latex like her suit? Otherwise I can see the phenomenal amount of work in this, keep on truckin!

Well since its a test and a work in progress I will wait for the final to give my critique. Its coming alot amazingly to me. I like the latex you used as well on the character!! Awesome work!!

Alas, I can't change the textures because they are what came with the MAX version of the model. I can convert the model, but I can't change it since it's not mine to change. This model is the Volga, a small runabout from Star Trek the Next Generation, and from what I've seen, all the chairs in Star Trek ships look like office chairs. It's why people fly all over the Enterprise bridge whenever she gets hit. :) I'm basically converting her for practice because I've get three models under construction that ARE my own, and since they are being built for Poser, I need the practice. :)

critque group: since i know basically nothing about what converting from max to poser entails in terms of what you can and can't change, i really can't comment on the job you're doing (though it's probably great). i will put out there, though, that this is a great opportunity to start playing with procedural textures. as you mentioned, this is a ship with tons of reference pics. right now you've got a ton of basic glass and plastic materials. to make it more advanced in poser, you could try to duplicate the star trek ship materials. also, even if you don't change textures, it might be that changing the materials would make it more true to how it appears in 3ds max. just a thought.

you could do this with UVMapping. Look for LCARS sites out on the web, there's dozens. It's a pain at times getting orientation right, etc. But it's a good start. Look for Data's Domain, the Lcars.net, Ex Astris Scientia, etc., good sources for them (I make my own in Corel Draw, but getting them right, particularly the 'shape of doom', is a real challenge) Keep at it, you're on the right track.

I realize it's a WIP so I won't give you a hard time but - no shadows. Really nice glossy look on the plastic surfaces. Since you're working on the textures: the back of the chair could look better if the boxy bits were a different material zone, done with metal or plastic instead of the fabric texture.

Yup, and now I've got missing polys on various parts of the ship. I may need to discontinue because the 3DS I used for the conversion was more damaged than I thought. And my converter won't do MAX files. :(

I've just been so busty with my pet project to remap Posette, that I haven't had time to keep up with my comments. Although I can only spare this a very quick glace, it looks to be a very good render. DO keep up the good work. David P. Hoadley
