Description
Wanted to do something with the scout tower and ended up with this. I've had a hard time lately with me landscapes looking very 2D?? Is it the lighting/atmosphere, do you think?? Any ideas, appreciated, Susan

Beautiful image Susan, terrific harbour scene!

The image looks great. I specially like the POV, the water, the vegetation, the ground texture. All these are excellent. However, like you say, there's not much depth in the scene. It's hard to say why but I see several possible ways to maybe improve it: a) the more obvious is to increase haze or fog, b) put more lighting from the sky and less from the ambient (as this will bring shadows, which help to tell the spacial relationship between elements), c) put the clouds less uniform, in small patches, going smaller as they are farther away from the camera. d) put similar elements with well known dimensions, like trees, in several distances from the camera; as they become smaller with the distance, the sense of depth should increase. I hope this helped.

I like it a lot. Maybe my sense of depth feeling with this one is that the ship is too large, to be at that spot, I feel it for sure would ran aground there, especially with full sail. I would place the ship much further backwards. But that's just a feeling. As I said, I like it!

I agree with Rutra here, especially with the 'b' solution. In the 'Atmosphere Editor' select the 'Light' tab and adjust the 'light balance' more towards the 'Sunlight' instead of 'Ambient' Another thing i usually do is add some extra spotlights and use light-tune to influence only specific items (and beware not to casting shadows from them) in the scene. For example: i would use a spotlight to give the vegetation in the lower left corner of your image some extra depth. Simply load a spotlight, make shure that the light direction from the spotlight is approximately the same direction from the sun, make shure the spotlight is then selected and go into the 'light editor' and select the 'influence' tab and select 'only objects marked below' and then select the veggies. This way you create/add extra depth with several spotlights on several objects in a scene !! Your composition is very good imo :-)

Excellent scene, Susan!!! Yes, haze will help depth, objects farther away from the camera and scaled smaller will show depth (terrains as well as vegetation, people and/or props).

I like your scene ! Suggestions here are very good (haze, scale, lights). You could also try a different lens (more wide angle)
