Description
Taking into account all of the suggestions and criticisms (all of which were great, BTW) I received on the first posting, and allowing for the fact that my Vue 6 Esprit Final Release wouldn't render in any mode except Preview, I went back to the V6E pre-release and completely rebuilt this image.
I changed the lighting, added the stream, reduced the ecosystems material sizes and, basicsally, tweaked the image until I had something I liked a lot. I, also, retextured Apollo in Poser so that he wasn't so orange/red. I reposed Kayleigh so that she's looking more at the puppy and I changed him from a Mastiff to a Parson's Terrier so that he was more easily seen.
Thanks for all the great suggestions - hopefully they helped make the image better than it was.

This is lovely! The only thing that throws my eye off is that while I know the male and female are probably sitting right next to each other, the male looks so much smaller than the female (particularly noticeable by the size of their heads). I suspect this is because of the camera setting, perhaps you might have to increase the focal settings. With four dogs, I've seen the "play bow" many times. LOL He wants her attention ... perhaps it would enhance the mood of the image if she were looking down at the dog instead of directly into the camera? Other than those two minor things, it's a nice image!

Lighting is very good, and the composition of the foreground is excellent. The dog seems to float a little above the ground. Placing Poser figures correctly on an uneven Vue terrain is a bear, so I usually use a Poser terrain prop (often RDNA Macrocosm or Microcosm) to pose the figures precisely on the ground, and then import the whole set into Vue for material adjustments and rendering. In this case, the dog's hind legs could be hidden by a patch of grass or weed. I'd also suggest using another material for the foreground terrain, more brownish in color, with suggestions of old decomposed leaves and branches. Woodland soil. The free Microcosm tileable textures at RDNA can do a good job here. Connect them to bump too, and you'll have a very believable woodland soil. The distant terrain with the birch trees somehow looks "off", as if it's too near and the trees are too small. Again, I think it has to do with the scale of the terrain material - I'd suggest reducing the material scale by a factor of 4 or more. The shadow effects on the foreground tree are brilliant! And I like the theme. I'd love to have a nice day off too, with a beautiful woman and a playful dog.

This image looks like it took a lot of work. I agree though, that the man seems at least a half foot smaller than the woman. It might be positioning though.

I've just been so busty with my pet project to remap Posette, that I haven't had time to keep up with my comments. Although I can only spare this a very quick glace, it looks to be a very good render. DO keep up the good work. David P. Hoadley

I like your image, but theres something about the size of it; (please dont get mad) your characters seem a little lost with all that backgroundyou might want to try and crop this image with a photo editing program. (I use Photoshop for my post work) Let me send you somethingcheck your email

I really don't know anything about Vue lighting, but the overall effect is of an overhead sun - the characters are very contrasty to me, whereas the portion of sky that I can see looks more temperate. Maybe tone down the lighting some? Or make it more white? I'm not struck by any disparity in sizes between the man and the woman, but I would like to see some expression on their faces. I kind of expect them to be looking at the dog, but they're staring at something I can't see. The dog itself looks very good and natural pose, but would maybe benefit from a fill light to bring it out. Overall I love your composition, the plants look very lush.

The dog should be a lighter color as you can hardly see it. Also, it might help to have more ambient lighting.

this image exemplifies why i feel i need to learn vue to do proper landscapes. the plants and trees all look wonderful, if not perfectly photoreal. the scene has such a warm and relaxed feeling. even though their expressions are calm, the image feels full of joy. most of the issues that i can see have been addressed by others. i think the playfulness of the dog adds to the light hearted nature of the piece, and should be easier to see. the light is very yellow and saturated for midday. and the trees on the hill looked oddly like pieces on a scale model. some of that is the scale of the hill's texture, but it's also the uniformity of the trees. they're all perfectly straight, with no random low branches. there's no double trees where two trees have merged at the base. while the foreground has lots of natural chaos, the trees seem more deliberately placed. just as an addition, something about the plants in the front made me think that there was a stream running through the foreground. i was surprised to see a groundcover i can't identify. i think this would be a perfect and natural place for a brook and dragonflys. i see the edge of the brook marked by the broad flat leafed flowers. in terms of more general advice, i'd say think about variation in plant life coinciding with variation in environment. and the only other issue i have is that the two figures look way too red to me. it seems like many people see skin in real life as a sort of uniform saturated red, but i rarely see that on anyone and i live in central texas. in my experience and to my eyes, people have a much more varied hue that's usually lighter and less saturated. but many experts promote a look i find flushed. i really can't say enough wonderful things about this image. i hope you're very proud of doing such beautiful work.

The composition is very good, I don't really notice the size disparity. Coming behind Cobaltdream (an excellent critic), there's not much for me to add, but I think Apollo's pose is a little tense. Warm day, beautiful girl, beautiful dog... you get a little slouchy, a slight twist on the hips and waist, weight relaxing on his left arm perhaps.

The plants are lovely, and the poses really well done. The dog shows up as sort of a dark blob. If he was a little lighter he would be clearer.

Nicely put together scene. It is hard to comment after so many, but my main thought would probably be to agree with Chippsyann, a little less background & a little more focus on the characters.

A nicely composed image. I know in Vue it is very tempting to use a lot of plants and trees because you can :). There are two slight problems that I can see. The first is distance and size. I can't decide how far the figures are from the primulas - but I am assuming not far but they look very small in comparison to them and the second thing is the dog's tail - I would have expected it to be up because I don't see it as cowering but exploring :)

Ohhhh wow, I rerally love this it looks like a photo its soooo real looking, just spectacular

Very nice and a wonderful dedication to a very generous man.

A nice image. Not much more left to crit, as everyone else seems to have picked areas for improvement. I use Bryce instead of Vue, but Vue sure looks awesome.

Excellent image!!!

I didnt notice the dog when I first looked..had to use the large view. the people dont seem to be a part of the image...almost as if they were added as a n afterthought. Great plants and scene.

Some really nice changes. I like the lighting better, and the up sweep in the background terrain is pretty nice, I think that's different as well. Certainly it's more noticeable, and in a good way. The saplings in the middleground could probably be a little more random in distribution, or if they're already random (sometimes random numbers come up oddly ordered!) then maybe consider spreading them by hand a bit so they don't seem quite so evenly arranged. The stream is a nice addition also, especially since you pulled the figures to the left - it's a good balance. There is a little graininess to the foreground that is Vue's fault, and I believe there's a thread stickied in the Vue forum that is specifically about how to reduce graininess in renders, you might want to take a look at that. Shadows have a nice softer look from previous, good change.

Very nice ! the only thing that really bothers me is Apollo's skin fone - and that could be my monitor, He seems to be cool while the rest of the scene appears warm. I love the dog! I have dogs and know that play pose well!
JOELGLAINE
Very good render! Maybe a little to much of "Invasion of the Daffodils" but a great render! It has a very natural and 'unposed' look to the poses. Great job!

very impressive vue
