Description

We saw this guy (or girl) yesterday at the park. He, ok It, was about five feet long and in the early stages of molting. You can see how the skin looks almost blistered. Brenda touched his tail with her stick so he would move farther away from the path (out of danger of those who might hurt him), but instead he turned and made a charge at us! We discovered that this is a common behavior for this breed when we looked it up. The underside was pale but blueish along the edges. I think it might have an overall blue cast when not in the molt, perhaps the source of the name 'Blue Racer'. Anyway, I couldn't help but hearing a song from West Side Story(albeit altered a bit): "I feel itchy Oh so itchy . . . . " My apologies to those in whom snakes elicit disgust and so a heart felt ~ Thanks for Looking! Ken

Super textures when you zoom in. I wouldn't have stayed long enough to photograph it.

A really different type of racer for me. I am used to seeing the red racer with the thin red stripes down the side. Cool shot and info.

I think this is very impressive too. I used to play with garter snakes (they were all over our neighborhood when I was young...never see them anymore) when I was young. Then one day I saw a big snake and threw my jacket over its head and grabbed its head. I took it to Barney (the guy who owned the farm where my horse was) and asked what kind it was. He said it was a cottonmouth and that I should throw it as far as I could. Well, I took it back where I got it, flung my jacket and the snake and waited a while before collecting my jacket. I've never played with snakes since. If you don't know if they are poisonous, then you have to respect them all.

That's a racer alright - big though - with 5ft way over average. Good one!

Nice find Ken. Don't get too close, even if it is singing tunes from a musical.

I would like to see him after he sheds. Strange though, even though his body looks ragged, his eyes aren't cloudy blue like before they shed. Still you might want to return in a few days and look for the skin. Your camera has caught a great shot of the scales in the close up. I can see potential for some custom Mil Dragon Textures here.
