Description

Second shot, the sepia version. I wonder which you like best. I could not make my mind up. Grosmont station is not far from home. We love to go to see, to smell the trains.. steaming home! Thank you for looking. Happy day to all. Hugs. Diane.

I definitely prefer the sepia one... this toning adds to the nostalgia of this engin! Great shot.

What a fantastic shot, perfect perspective. I like both versions, but the sepia toning on this brings out better the impressive mood. Superbly done!!

I too like the sepia version better. If you exclude the modern font on the sign, the photo could have been taken in 1907, the sepia tone definitely give the photo a timeless quality.

Permit me to point out a trick to applying sepia or a secondary-tone colour to a photograph and that is to make sure the tone is light enough. In doing so we maintain the details in the darker areas while keeping enough of the tone in the lighter areas. The problem with presets is that they go to the extreme when it should be just a soft breath of a secondary tone. With your previous photograph of the railroad tracks and especially this photograph I would go much lighter. Just think of a veil, a transparent layer of secondary colour rather than a blanket. If you are using the automatic conversion to greyscale and not the channel mixer you miss out on creating contrast, but especially the roll colours play when converting to B/W. To answer your question, I would select the toned version because it suits your earlier upload of the railroad track photograph and you have in the making a series of Grosmont Station. The colour version has merits of its own and should not be dismissed, however I would also suggest in working with the levels and curves in order to increase the tonal range between light and dark and then converting to greyscale. I say all this because I believe in the strength of your earlier image On Track. Thank you for sharing. egmont

I like this one better than the other because the sepia enhances the atmosphere of antiquity that the subject represents.

I like both of these but I think on balance that the sepia one is more in keeping with the age of steam. The original photo though is excellent.

Ah, the North Yorkshire Steam Railway. This shot would look good in Heartbeat!! I also cannot make up my mind which one I like the best, they are both great. Two brilliant shot, Diane. Have a great weekend. Hugs. Eileen.

Well, I would accuse you of "fishing" but I think you really feel one shot must be better than the other... so, my thought is I like the sepia best but it is not contrasted enough to pop the train out. The colored one is lovely and nicely lit but the "mood" of the steam train should be sepia to bring back the flavor of the past. I love them both, do you hear? And if pressed to choose one over the other... well, depends on the time of day and what I had for dinner the night before LOL!

I knew it was a dangerous spot to take a picture from yesterday, look what you could have been hit with.... just joking. I like the coloured one best, mainly because you can see more detail. Its a great shot shot with the steam billowing out.
