KHRONOS (or Chronus) was the Protogenos (primeval god) of time, a divinity who emerged self-formed at the beginning of creation in the Orphic cosmogonies. Khronos was imagined as an incorporeal god, serpentine in form with three heads -- that of a man, a bull, and a lion. He and his consort, the serpentine goddess Ananke (Inevitability), entwined the primal world-egg in their coils and split it apart to be reformed into the ordered universe of divided earth, sea and sky. Khronos and Ananke remained circlingthe universe after creation -- remote, incorporeal gods whose passage drove the circling heavens and the eternal passage of time. Nonnus describes Khronos petitioning Zeus in the guise of an elderly man with long white hair and beard. However the Orphics regarded him as remote even to the gods. The figure of Khronos was essentially a cosmological doubling of the Titan Kronos. The Orphics occasionally combined him with the creator-god Phanes.His Phoenician equivalent was probably Olam (Eternal Time), which the Greeks transcribed as Oulomos. KHRONOS GOD OF TIME Khronos as god of time was practically identical to the Titan Kronos.
