I'm curious if such a photo manipulation clears an artist from any claim by the copyright holder of the original image. BTW: Beautifully done painting.

There's a fine line between ARTISTIC INTERPRETATION and a lawsuit for copyright infringement. I believe that DIZZY (as above) would not stand the test of being used for an advertisement as it is a COPY of an existing work. I suppose my lawyers could argue the Artistic Interpretation angle and probably get away with it - it would depend on the Estate, the country, the usage and terms of licensed media. Anyone else?
