Basically you add an image, or rather, its red, green and blue channels as B/W images, calculate their weights with the help of the image histogram, then add further transforms. There is a tutorial on deviantArt (sorry, don't have the url). A too small image will get pixelated, a too large introduce bugs - I have found 500 to 1000 pixels each side to be best.
