On December 13th 1577 Francis Drake, 10 officers and some 60 men on board the Golden Hind together with four other smaller ships secretly slipped their moorings in Plymouth and embarked on a voyage which was to go down in history.
The hardships endured in overcrowded ond primitive quarters is unbelievable. Only 59 men survived with Drake. Returning 3 years later with a vast cargo of treasure. (the Queen's share alone was more than the countries national debt and twice that of the cost of fighting the Armada 8 years later.) 'El Draco' became one of the most famous men in Europe, and was feared and reviled by the Spanish.
Drake was duly knighted onboard.
