I grew up on my grandad's John Deere B ... just the next model after yours, apparently. A very simple, rugged machine, 2-cylinder motor. And starting it by rotating that flywheel was HARD ... even with the petcocks open!

12hp? Looks like my father in laws tractor. He used to give the flywheel a turn/effort to spin it and it would kick a bit but started and ran with the old put put rythm. He used a thrush muffler of my 70 mustang on it just before he sold it to a local man who owed a collection of old deeres ......

How about starting the John Deere R? Now there was a tractor! Little gas starting motor, get it started and warmed up and revving good, then gradually engage those two humongous diesel pistons. What an engine. My dad always used to say he put the farm on a paying basis with that tractor. Your picture brings back memories though. Thanks for sharing.
