Description

An owl we share in Europe and the United States and Canada the Great Grey Owl. I was happy to be able to get this close in flight shot even if this meant the lower wing was cropped.. The Great Grey Owl Strix Nebulosa was first described by Johann Reinhold Forster in 1772. The name "nebulosa" is derived from the Latin "Nebulosus", meaning misty or foggy. Adults have a big, rounded head with a grey face and yellow eyes with darker circles around them. These are signs the owl hunts by day, and has remarkable hearing. The underparts are light with dark streaks; the upper parts are grey with pale bars. This owl does not have ear tufts and has the largest "facial disc" of any raptor. In terms of length, the Great Grey Owl rivals the Eurasian Eagle Owl and the Blakiston's Fish Owl as the world's largest owl. However, much of its size is deceptive, since this species' fluffy feathers, long tail and large head obscure a body lighter than most other large owls. The length may range from (24 to 33 inches), averaging (28 inches) for females and(26 in) for males. The wingspan can exceed(60 inches), but averages (56 in) for females and (55 in) for males. The adult weight can range from(1.5 to 4 lbs), averaging (2.8 lbs) for females and (2.2 lbs) for males. Another extraordinary fact is the claws which it locks back under its feet, and in this way is able to lock onto its prey, and then land in a tree without fear of dropping its victim..

The body size is interesting. They really are much smaller than they appear because they all have a lush growth of fluffy feathering - their heads aren't that big and the faces are not shaped like that (although the bone structure is of a wider, flatter faced animal with interesting brow bones that other birds to not have) - its all feathering. They are stubby-bodied, thick and muscled to power those large, heavy-feathered wings and to help grab and carry their prey when they can not sit and eat it in peace where it lay. We have an abundance of barn owls here and I love to listen to them come out in the evening to hunt, to see their light tan and white bodies swoop overhead and land on the top of a light pole. How wonderful you got this close to this magnificent specimen. Really awesome.

Wing cropped or not, this is caught perfectly on the end of the power-stroke of the wing beat. Such a ruthless look in its eye as it homes in on its target. Intense stuff! Great capture as always Danny, congrats. Why only F5 though?
