Description

I try to keep my photography entries down to one picture per month at this site. However this photo was just too special and too lucky a shot not to post. It was a very lovely and spring-like day in Toronto today when I just happened upon this old streetcar turning onto Broadview Avenue. The venerable predecessor to the TTC's modern red rockets, this is a President's Conference Car - the PCC. Painted in the old TTC livery of maroon and cream, this is one of only two PCC streetcars left in the TTC's rolling stock. PCCs first appeared on Toronto streets in the late 1930's and served as revenue vehicles as late as 1994. At that time, all but two of the remaining PCC fleet were literally given away to museums and fledgling streetcar or light rail services in North America. One now serves the 'F Market' line in San Fransisco, another was sent back to Cleveland from where it was purchased by the TTC in the 1950's, another is in Kenosha, Wisconsin serving their heritage streetcar loop. The two remaining PCCs in Toronto are now used only for tours and special events. Car 4500 is definitely serving for some private function today. The streetcar's destination sign specifies Route 522. That is the Exhibition West line, a special route which takes riders to the Dufferin Gates of the Canadian National Exhibition grounds when the CNE is running (mid August to early September). But the line never ran on Broadview Avenue. NOTE: TTC - Toronto Transit Commission

Thanks for the info on the cars. Kenosha, Wisconsin is only an hour or so away from me. I would be interested to check out this Heritage Loop that you mention. THanks for this brilliant capture!!!

I always enjoy your Toronto shots, especially the TTC ones. I had no idea these cars were still around! Thanks for the lesson, you should make a wikipedia entry on the subject :)

Very interesting information Clayton, They have a PCC Exhibition at Crich, two trams by themselves in one of the sheds, #674 is the New York Third Ave Transit with a date of 1939, the other #1147 is from the Hague 1957. Fantastic shot of this one, it looks pristine, they have certainly been looking after it. Excellent capture and narrative. Bravo!!!!!

In photo this you done better to isolate the object that you want the viewers to see and back is not over powering the main image

Wow thhis is an awesome shot! I have never had an upclose look at a streetcar before. Does it run on electricity? I ask because of the lines above it
