I didn't see the original, but I do like this one. Her pose and expression does indeed make her look sad. The only suggestion I have is maybe a little more shadow for more depth, but really the render is just fine the way it is.

a sweet and gentle scene. your background and foreground mesh nicely, and i like the connection between the red of the mushroom and the red of her wings and hair. but for such an emotional scene, she's very stiff. you might try relaxing her shoulders and torso some by bringing her collars down a bit and bending her torso forward some. also, her fingers seem a bit uniformly posed. last is actually the pose of her hair. it's positioned very stiffly in the back. if you could make it fall more naturally, it would add a good deal of flow to her pose. the light is nice and i like the stars on her outfit. you have a very good sense of color. thanks for sharing your work!

Very cute :) You probably want to have her balanced better on the toadstool, she's perched on the downslope and would likely slide off pretty easily. Might also try to get her hair either settled against her body, or blowing in the wind.
