Description

Villa Torlonia. The Torlonia's had in the preceding centuries ammassed a large and important collection of roman statuary, but at the time the Villa was built, early XIXth, times had changed. To decorate the Villa they commissioned copies of roman art from some able local craftsmen, and even these copies were heavily damaged in recent times, the Villa was occupied for several months by american troops at the end of the war, and then mostly left to rot. The careful restoration was not pushed to the point of remaking lost heads and limbs. It's not great art, but great ambience, mood ...

Definitely a lovely mood here... but I still have to wonder about someone who puts several life-sized statues of naked people in their foyer... LOL! Nice shot.
