Description

This fourth order Fresnel lens is on display at the Mukilteo lighthouse in Mukilteo, Washington, USA. (It's in a glass display case, which accounts for the odd quality of the photograph.) There's another Fresnel lens in the tower which is still in use. The light runs off a single 150 watt bulb, and can be seen for twelve miles. There are lots of informative sites on the Internet that explain the Fresnel lens and how it works, for those of you who are interested in that sort of thing. It's pretty fascinating! You can see a photograph of the lighthouse in my gallery, if you are so inclined. It's the cover page for a poem which I posted in the writer's gallery a couple of days ago, so it never showed up here in the photography pages. Of course you can also browse the Internet for more information on the Mukilteo lighthouse.

I've heard a great deal about these. Point Arena lighthouse used to have one but it was replaced with something more modern and lighter in weight. Just gorgeous and I thank you for finally showing me what these looked like. :-)

Great shot of this wonderful piece of work. I'm amazed that many of these were made in France and survived the trip on a ship all the way to the west coast of the US. Thanks for sharing; I'd never seen this one before.

Wow, what a gorgeous instrument! All that glass, color and refractive stuff! Great POV and lighting in this impressive hunk of handiwork! But, call it what you will, to me it looks much like a part used in the time machine from the HG Wells movie of the same name. Either that or a Captain Nemo type submersible.

Absolutely amazing! I've never heard of or seen one of these before and I think you've captured it beautifully considering all of those reflective surfaces you were faced with - absoulty stunning. Great capture. xx

Now this is special, a photo of an object done so well it competes with any abstract art around. Just GREAT.
