Description

Nursery web spiders are spiders of the family Pisauridae. And are some of the most interesting as they are hunters and dont use a web in the conventional sense. They resemble wolf spiders (family Lycosidae), but they carry their egg sacs by means of their jaws and pedipalps (instead of attaching them to their spinnerets). When the eggs are about to hatch, a mother spider will build a nursery "tent," put her egg sac inside, and mount guard outside. The name nursery web spider is especially given to the European species I have captured here Pisaura mirabilis, but the family also includes fishing spiders and raft spiders. This one had joined two leaves together, and is lying in wait with the front four of its eight legs together to sense the approach of prey.

Now you see, that really creeps me out far more than my tarantula shot did!! This thing looks really vicious and fast and hungry and angry and....... oooh, those little hairs on his legs yuk!!! Absolutely fantastic capture though, but has left me sitting in a rather tense position now! As with all of your photography, great lighting, colour, POV and DOF!!! xxx

These spiders have always been a fascination. Their lack of web was a curiousity but now I have learned why... really good shot! Lots to observe here.
