Description

I was tending to the roses when this fellow came by. he was bored and just wanted to talk, but I had no idea to what he was saying The syrphidae are famous for their bee and wasp mimickry, but this fly goes the extra mile - it uses its front legs to mimic the jointed wasp antennae of the Vespids. When the fly lands, it hold its front legs up in front of its face and waves them about. The effect is really quite convincing when you see one strike the pose. Also, the clouded leading edge of the wing mimics the appearance of wasp wings http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Syrphid_fly_Temnostoma.jpg http://www.cirrusimage.com/fly_syrphid_Temnostoma.htm thanks for viewing and any comments

There again, the two front legs going up like that might just mean he's looking for a hand out! Another very interesting bug. You would love Louisiana, we have bugs here even the scientist don't know. Personally, I think some of them are aliens mimicking insects. :O)

A lovely shot of a bright little critter. Amazing how they mimic the bee and wasp, not the sting I hope. We don't have these little fellows so it is great to hear about them. Thankyou.
