Doesn't Memphis have a Historic Preservation Committee or Board or something? Not that it always helps. Here in Jax, there was a movement put forward by the Historic Preservation Commission (part of city government) to save an historic and architercturally significant building that has once been a furniture store. They had hoped that the building would be saved and incorporated into the design of the new public library building that would take up the rest of the block. Instead, the city decided to ignore their advisors pleas and blew up the building. There's a nice new library covering most of the block now, but it just seems like they could've done both things- built the new library AND kept the historic building for posterity. You are right. It's a shame and something we all regret a few years down the road when what we're left with later is achitecture that can't stand the test of time. Although, in our case, the new library is architechturally beautiful. It is a beautiful public building. Nice image... quite lovely texture.

According to an IW friend of mine as of Spring 2006 a grant was given to conduct an architectual and engineering feasibility study for the restoration of the Clayborn Temple, including an engineering study and conceptual designs for building restoration. So perhaps the building will be saved afterall... Let's hope so. This building's historical importance and unique design has earned it a place among the Memphis skyline. A place of this significance shouldn't be lost to history, even if it's in the name of progress.
