Description
Us Brits are a sentimental lot and love nothing less than re-visiting the past. Once a year at Pickering in North Yorkshire the North Yorkshire Steam Railway hold an event to commemorate the Second World War where veterans and enthusiasts get dressed up and re-enact that time in our past. Most of the action takes place around Pickering Railway Station where you can take a ride on a steam train, which is great fun. Most of the participants tend to congregate on one side of the track whilst the spectators stay on the other side and watch all the colourful characters and action which takes place. These five ladies are all wearing their Womens Royal Air Force uniforms and were obviously have a great time talking over old times!
I will be taking you back in time in my next few postings and hope you enjoy re-living the past with me! (By the way, I am not old enough to have been there at the time!)

Well Eileen, I think this is great and just about every lady in this photograph is having a great time. My only comment is that I wonder what it might be if you had altered the image to a duo-tone in Channel Mixer and thereby relived the past technically? Artistically interpretations aside, I look forward to more of such images from the UK. Thank you for sharing. egmont

This is an amazingly beautiful and emotional image. I love the ladies all decked out in their uniforms. They did not drink a bit later on and do the cancan on the picnic tables, did they? :)

Well, truly you Brits don't have title on loving to re-enact the past! As was mentioned, we have re-enactments of everything from the days of King Arthur (that one done in Sterling, NY) to the Civil War done in full dress! We have whole villages populated with folks dressed in period costume, "living" as they did back when .. farming, milking, making furniture, etc. We are, after all, immigrants from Europe and beyond! This is such a marvelous photo, a keepsake portrait!

Great collection, excellent shot !

Very nostalgic. My mum was in the WAAF and my grandfather in the RAF. Great to see so much character in their faces.

Glad the RAF is their to save the day. I thought they were Scots since you folks in Yorkshire are on the Border Marches. You never know when reivers will show up and force haggis and whisky on everyone while singing "I Love A Lassie." Oh, good group portrait. Hope you gave them one.
