Description
I hope this photo smells as good as it did while I was taking it.
Just stuffing around.
I think this pic would be better with a black, or at least a darker coloured plate.
Any and allcritiques welcome.
...edit...forgot to mention, I love cooking. These are just part of my collection...

I like the arangement of the spices...Instead of changing the plate color , perhaps a darker background (table), to make what's on it stand out. Still it looks fine as it is.

I don't think a black background would enhance the shot at all - I do think the tome of the light needs to be controlled, either in the raw to jpeg/tiff conversion or in curve on a jpeg/tiff image. Love your frame.

Beautiful arrangement! I agree about the light, but am too much of a newbie to give any meaningful advice.

It seems there are a few differences among the comments as to the separation of the dish and the table, so if you do not mind my weighing in on the discussion since I myself it was too much on the high key side. First off, the arrangement of the spices is very good and I would not make any changes here. I would remove the knife since it really has nothing to do with spices other than crushing the cardamom seedpods. I feel the lighting and the table surface really need to be addressed because here lays the flaw that requires correction. So lets start with the fact that the spices all have a wonderful texture and since texture plays an important element in the shot, I would go with a nice withered fence post to set the dish upon. It will take care of the tone since it will be darker and it will have enough texture to help with the spices. I would bring in the lighting closer to the surface in order to pick up more of the texture and create some shadow. However the biggest change would be bring the camera further down so it is more at a 45 degree angle and not at the 80-90 degree angle it is at right now. This will open up the background and you will need to fill it with some objects and what you place there determines what the purpose of the photograph is. I like the bay leaves and cinnamon sticks and I would even have then touching the top of the dish and make it part of the plate and the spices therein. I would also block off the light source to the back so things become less defined and the focus is back on the dish. You can use old books and tin cans or mason jars without labels as part of the background in order to fill it. I hope that helps. Thank you for sharing. egmont

I might have left out the knife but I do love the textures of the spices and it makes me want to cook a curry. You have a great avatar!
