Description

In December 1758, the commissioner of Chatham Dockyard was instructed to prepare a dry dock for the construction of a new 106-gun first-rate ship, the "HMS VICTORY" Lord Nelson hoisted his flag at the "Victory" in May 1803 with Samuel Sutton as his flag captain. On 21 October 1805 Nelson engaged in his final battle, the Battle of Trafalgar. After crippling the French flagship "Bucentaure", The "Victory" moved on to the "Redoutable". The two ships became entangled, at which point snipers in the fighting tops of the "Redoutable" were able to pour fire down onto the deck of the "Victory". Nelson was one of those hit, a bullet entered his left shoulder, pierced his lung, and came to rest at the base of his spine. Nelson retained consciousness for four hours, but died soon after the battle ended with a British victory! The "HMS Victory" is still in commission as the flagship of the admiral for the time being acting as Second Sea Lord in his role as Commander in Chief of the Royal Navy's Home Command (CINCNAVHOME). She is the oldest commissioned warship in the world, although the USS Constitution, launched 30 years later, is the oldest commissioned warship still afloat. The "HMS Victory" attracts around 350,000 visitors per year in her role as a museum ship. I still remember my visit at Mdme Tousseaud's where the scene you are decribing is showed... although this was nearly 30 years ago it's still very present in my imagination.

Rey, great picture, but if that is suppose to be Nelson, he had one arm amputated, and wore an eye patch because of another wound. He was brought home to England in a keg of rum, to perserve the body. I do not know whether the if the Royal Navy still refers to rum as Nelson's blood.

Oops, unless this NOT Vice-Admiral Nelson, you forgot that he was an amputee. His right sleeve was always painted empty and pinned to the front of his uniform coat lapels... Oh, and his bicorne hat is a little high on his head, needs to come down a little more.... otherwise a nice image all-around...
