So this is a different grasshopper then the previous one I posted (this is a painted grasshopper I think) and he is quite a bit bigger then the last one. (S)he was difficult to get a shot of as this thing can really jump far! The pot that it is climbing on below is a standard 8 inch pot for planting and you can see the size comparison there. It has substantial weight when you pick it up.. and it is now busy eating my African Irises :(( But geesh if its not a beautiful thing.. It does not appear to fly yet but when it pulls out its wings they are a very lovely firey shade or red/orange. Thanks for having a look see:)

we get them in a green color, and they can be quite nasty! i once had one fly into my windscreen and he was almost half as big as my size nine shoe!!!!!lol!!!! things do grow big in south africa! great shot!!

I think its the mature lubber, thats what I call them anyway. I only speculate since the black with yellow striped ones disappear and these suddenly show up. And you have this cool pic to show them in there glory.

I've heard these get to be about a full 12 inches in New Zeland. They are normally eaten by large rodents. This is a beautiful pic.
