Description
The Mountain Cornflower (centaura Montana)
[best viewed full size]
There are several types of cornflower that are native to Europe. Sadly, in the UK their natural habitats are being destroyed and wild cornflower are now endangered. 50 years ago there were 264 sites where this flower grew wild; there are now just 3 sites in the UK.
In folklore cornflowers were worn in button-holes by young men in love. If the flowers colour faded too quickly it was taken as a sign that the mans love was unrequited.
Thanks for looking!

Oh now this is just simply beautiful Carl and such a romantic tale to go with it - sad about its habitat here in the UK as this is such a beautiful flower. The colours are glorious and the light is perfect. Excellent compostition, excellent photo!! xx

A superb shot of such a beautiful flower. I love the cornflower!! Sad to hear so few grow in the wild. I grow them here in North Yorkshire. I love your story too...Thank you for this superb posting. Diane.

My cornflowers are cultivated and not wild. I have not seen any in the wild or maybe I'm not looking. Although cultivated and wild are very similar I can see the subtle differences. Lovely shot.
