Description

Of all the nights I hunted for a good pic on the current visiting asteroid Vesta - which is visible with the naked eye - it turned out that this pic on the 23rd was the best. Vesta is huge and has a diameter of 530km/330miles. I did a reverse image to make it softter on the eye. For the star gazers, the huge spot in the right low corner is Jupiter with Scorpio visible directly above to the top. I hope somebody out there loves the stars like I do. I was pleasantly surprised by the low noise of my Canon at ISO 1600. Location: Leeudoringstad, South Africa (GoogleEarth - 27°14'14.91"S 26°14'25.23"E)

Cold hearted orb
That rules the night

Removes the colours

From our sight

Red is gray and

Yellow white

But we decide

Which is right

And which is an Illusion

Nights In White Satin
- Moody Blues

I love to gaze at the night sky when we have a clear sky. Althought that doesn't happen very often. lol. But when it does it's breathtaking. And it must be in Africa. Love to see what you take next. Your photographs are always interesting Piet. Take care.. Will talk to you soon. :0)bonita

Glad to see you posting, hope you and your family are well. Interesting presentation of the night sky and the words are so apt. I have been away at my relo's in the bush and stargazing in the crisp clear nights up there....dunno what I'm seeing most times except the 'Southern Cross' and 'Orion the Hunter'! Jen

amazed at how well you are in stars. I've been toolazy perhaps to learn the basics. it's unfair to be corked down for over a month, Piet. I believe you all are fine down there. please confirm

That's too cool! Nice job. I always loved astronomy as well as Science Fiction. Someday maybe one of us will actually reach Vesta...

Amazing ! But, probably am I very silly, why black spots on white ? I would have thought white on dark background ? Lucky you to live in an unspoiled land !

Fascinating photo and inspiration to me to try something similar. Something I've always wanted to do but didn't think would be possible with a 'mere' Canon DSLR, especially at only 28mm??
