Description

Another trip to Toronto today. The meeting Queen Street and Soho Street in Toronto is one of the city's popular shopping and cultural centres. It is a very busy place even in the winter. In this picture one can see a street artist hard at work just beneath the tree. Queen and Soho are often quardened off to accommodate the many concerts that take place there during the year. There are also some very nice pubs and restaurants such as the one on the corner. The streetcar picking up passengers is TTC ALRV 4201 running on the Queen Line (Route 501). ALRVs are articulated for double capacity and are most commonly found on the very busy Queen Line, the TTCs longest streetcar route. ALRVs are also used on the Bathurst Line (Route 511). As you can see, automobiles must stop behind a streetcar while it picks up passengers. A provincial (Ontario) wide law that dates back to the day when streetcars plied the roads of most towns over 40,000 in size. This rule is a tremendous construnation for those who drive SUVs while talking on cell phones. But, be warned, I've seen the outcome of many a contest between a TTC streetcar and the huskiest of SUV. Let's just say that 'light' is a relative term in the expression 'light rail'. In the background of this picture you can also see the main studio for CITY TV in Toronto and its various satellite stations. People of my age call the place 'Znaimer-vision', named after Moses Znaimer the co-founder of what is now a Canadian media empire. Actually, Moses Znaimer is a very interesting and articulate man in spite of all the silly jokes about his, 'dumpy UHF station broadcasting blue movies out of a broom closet'. Torontoians will know what I mean about that. By the way, please excuse some loss of image quality as I had to resize the picture in order for it to conform to Renderosity's size limitations.

I'd love to visit Toronto one day. Thanks for the pic. I don't know much about photography but I like how the old meets the new in this picture. (The building in the foreground and those buildings in the background).

The Black Bull! I've been there once or twice, good if you want a nice sunny patio. I live out in the suburbs, and I don't know if your shots make Toronto look better than it is, but now I WANT to go downtown (traffic and all!). As for SUV's vs. Streetcars, even crocodiles have to give way when there's a hippo in the water...
