Now, here's something you don't see every day: a smiling Neramec. You can tell she's Neramec, because she has those huge ears. When she opens her mouth, she's incapable of saying anything that's less than brilliant - that's a Neramec trait, too. Still, science long ago allowed successful Neramec-human cross-breeding, so most people, Neramec, as well as human, assume that Zeldra Telenn is half-human, since the Neramec aren't given to smiling (it was even once believed that the Neramec facial musculature did not permit a smile), whereas Zeldra's face is rarely without a smile. The Neramec are many things: clever, loving, honest, dogged and brave - but they don't appreciate humour, don't laugh and rarely smile. "Amorous, not humorous", as the human saying has it. Zeldra Telenn, in fact, is a pure-blooded Neramec, but one who has spent her entire life in a predominantly human city. Human ways have rubbed off on her. She enjoys a joke, has an infectious laugh and smiles most of the time. Is this evolution in action?
