Description
thanks for viewing and comments. I took these drone flies the same time as the dragonfly
Hover-flies are some of the most attractive and noticeable flies around, they are also as their name implies incredibly good at flying and hovering. Many Hover-flies are clever mimics of Bees and Wasps (Hymenoptera) though they themselves cannot bite or sting. Volucella bombylans which exists in two forms, a yellow tailed form which looks like Bombus terrestris and a red tailed form which looks like Bombus lapidarius is a fine example. As larva, Hover-flies feed on a great variety of substances, from cow dung (Rhingia campestris), muddy puddles and ditches ( Eristalis tenax the Drone Fly), to living plant material (Merodon equestris the Bulb Fly) and living aphids (Episyrphus balteatus the Marmalade Hover-fly and Syrphus ribesii a common black and yellow wasp mimic). In fact so many Hover-fly larva eat aphids that, like the lady-beetles they are well known as a gardeners friend. Not only are Hover-flies useful because they eat aphids but they are also the second most important group of insect pollinators, after the Bees and Wasps.

Wow I'm surprise he could fly with all that pollen. It's good to see so much pollen on him with all the problems with lack of bees. Another excellent shot Richard.

Bottom light is a nice image. I can see this in some form for commercial (Don't know for what though), but it's a nice image with good details and it's very focused towards the fly itself. I like the upper right one as well, it's the insect version of David and Goliath I think. If the image is cropped you should definately get some more space towards the bottom and give that bug some room, and balance out the image. Good work. On another note: I almost got myself a 5D a few months back, but it's still a bit pricy and I rather have another 20/30D house. Two camerhouse's each with their own lens, tele and wide, would suit me more than just one house. But I can imagine the look of the 5D with a 400mm 2.8 whiteseries lens...It's the kind of thing that makes your mind wander. :)

Well Richard you have surpassed yourself! Not only are these extraordinary photos, they are also educational as well. I never heard of a Hover fly, although I am sure I have seen them and just assumed they were either bees of wasps. I think you should publish a book consisting of your marvelous photos of insects, along with your insights. I would definitely purchase a copy or two__excellent!!!
