Description
Taken for a challenge over on DPChallenge.com, i thought i would share; the challenge title was "Double Take". It placed 68th out of 382 (ie top 20%), which is fairly decent considering the quality of photography over there :)
Thanks for all the encouraging comments left on my mini series of "skate" shots. Hope you like this one - another step in a different direction.
I would encourage everyone to step outside their comfort zone, i know there are a fair few people who tend towards one style of photography or even one object (flower photography comes to mind) but the amount of insight i have gained in taking shots has increased dramatically since i was forced to think and plan shots i wouldnt normally take for submission to this challenge site. I never really considered walking up to random skaters in the skatepark until i thought about photography in terms of "what cool things are there to shoot?" rather than "what do i like shooting and what am i comfortable with?" - i actually really enjoyed shooting the skaters and learnt a thing or two and was reminded of certain techniques (fill flash being one of them - which i messed up quite royally: i got only a silhouetted backflip shot because i wasnt thinking about my camera setup, and thus missed the shot i wanted to take (as after that they were knackered and didnt want to do any more)). The guy whose ass you saw in the first shot mentioned that the angles were a bit weird in some of the shots - interesting critique coming from a non-photographer, but considering he probably reads skate-mags then it is worthwhile critique as the photo may not be properly showing off his skill from that angle - also that a face is a good thing to have in such a photo as generally you are showing off the author of the trick and not just the trick. Other things to think about than just "The shot"...
Anyway, ramble over - Enjoy!
