Description

Just playin' around with my new camera (Canon Powershot G7), which I've no idea how to use yet. lol! Really need to read up on the settings for it or see if there's a "Photography for Dummies" book or something. I really want to figure out how to do macro shots, so I stalked this butterfly all over my back yard this afternoon. It came out alright, I guess, best out of the shots I managed to get of it... but it's got a lot more noise than I want it to have. Not sure how to get the photo nice and crisp and clean. I'm sure it's a setting I'm using, or not using. I know this camera of mine is capable of much better macro shots though as I've seen some taken by other people with the same camera. Obviously, though, they know what they're doing... unlike myself. ;p I do like how it captured the butterfly's shadow on the blade of grass though. Just wish it had less noise & was crisper. :/ Any photographers out there have any tips... especially as far as macro shots are concerned? I'd love to hear them! Just keep in mind that I'm a total noob! ;) Thanks for looking! XOXO, Brandi

Super first effort. As a photographer who has had a lifetime of experience, the best thing I can recommend for this camera (I had one before) is to set it on P mode so that you can control the major functions in the menus. This will allow you to get max quality obtainable with the camera and still retain all the auto functions for a newbie. You need to set the ISO at min. setting 50 (or 80, I can't remember what it is anymore), set the file size to max (biggest number X number combo), and compression to min. These settings will give you max image quality. Also go to www.dpreview.com and look up the review for this camera. In the review, you will get an idea of what you can do with it and some of the settings I have been trying to describe. dpreview is the BEST digital camera website in the world and it is written in an easy to understand fashion. It will be your best investment for you and your new camera. Oh, yes. You did buy a very good/capable camera. Some of the "noise" you are seeing is a combination of actual noise and compression artifacts. Check out my photo website to see what this camera is capable of doing.

After reading up on your camera from the link Brandi, I think it is excellent value for money and probably more up to date than one of Canon's SLRs at twice the price. Beautiful shot my friend! Well done! Steve :o)

terrific shot Brandi!butterflies can be hard to shoot at times because they like to move around so much.my best advice is to learn your cameras capabilities (comes with lots of practice and reading)there are lots of good websites out there that can help you in your quest.some of the more important things you will want to read up on and understand are "aperture" settings and "shutter" settings(these are important because this is how you control depth of field(aperture/F-Stop)in your images.the shutter controls the time value for your exposures. Also read up on "bracketing" your exposures so you will not miss that must have once in a lifetime shot!and whatever you do do not give up because eventually these things will become second nature to you!Practice makes perfect and so does a lot of reading and applying what you learn.Good luck!!!!
