Description

In 1905 JM Synge and JB Yeats were in their early thirties. Synge was an up-and-coming playwright whose Playboy of the Western World would soon make him as famous his brother William. They had undertaken a trip into the Cannamara for a newspaper which was to be published twice a week about the "Congested Districts", and the desperation of hungry people eking out an existence among sublimely beautiful landscapes in wretched conditions, hardly changed since the evil days of 1845-49 and the Great Famine. I had decided to follow their footsteps for my 4 week photography trip of Ireland and driving west out of Galway City along the coast road into Connemara, I was soon deep in the bleakly beautiful landscape vividly described by Synge: "small square fields of oats, or potatoes, or pasture, divided by loose stone walls that are built up without mortar

The beauty of Ireland is often mixed with sadness. It's the reason so many Irish, including my grandad, came to America. This is a fine soft view of Ireland on a fine soft day.

What a very tranquil and atmospheric image this is Danny! I think that the sombre clouds really add to the overall mood of the shot. Well done! Eileen xx

What a wonderful capture of this fantastic lake and surrounding scenery. The colours are amazing as is the clarity and the sky makes for such a moody atmosphere. Excellent. xx

As you can imagine from our recent exchange of mail, your magnificent capture of Connemara rings a big emotional bell to me and what you wrote on Synge and Yeats also. I can't wait to see other treasures you've unearthed on your journey to the Emerald Isle. Thank you for sharing, JLuc

My father's family came here from Ireland about 1856 but I don't know where they lived there or anything about them - seems they wanted to start over in the USA with no memories to slow them down. I wish I knew more. I have seen photos of all sorts of places all over the world, well known and the secluded but I've never really seen anything of Ireland until you uploaded this and the last one. Its pretty thrilling to see the country your family came from. Thanks and this is so great!
