Description

A few years ago I've purchased three cactuses for my rock garden. I didn't expect them to survive in our climate of cold and wet summers and relatively warm and.. wet .. winters. After all cactuses are made for the desert.. not for the Netherlands.. But.. they all survived and this morning I could not believe my eyes. One of the cactuses had started blooming.. I expected it to be a rare event.. but it appears not to be so rare.. it seems to bloom in the high Alpines of Switzerland too and in Denmark.. Still I am very pleased with my blooming cactus.. BTW: the scientific name is Opuntia humifusa.

Sure looks like what we call a spineless prickly pear in Texas. Amazing it will bloom and do so well there. The flowers are beautiful but they don't last too long. Good catch!
