Description

The O'o nuku'umu (or more easily pronounced, Black Mamo)was endemic to the islands of Hawai'i, Mau'i and Moloka'i. It went extinct sometime after 1907 due to the destruction of its understory habitat by introduced cattle and deer, and predation of its nests by introduced rats and mongooses. R.C.L. Perkins first discovered this beautiful jet-black bird in 1893 in Pelekunu Valley on Moloka'i. The last sightings of the bird were in 1907, but they were seen further to the east on the island. They ate primarily flower nectar (arborescent lobelia and ohi'a-lehua) and ocassionally some insects. They spent only a few seconds over each flower, darting their tongues very rapidly in and out. The Black Mamo is one of the "new" birds from an upcoming Sequel to "Threatened, Endangered, Extinct". (Premiere Siggraph 2007). This package was not only designed to provide yet more interesting birds, but to educate the public as to the current plight of so many species due to man's footprint. Rendered in Poser 7. Models: Jungle foliage (RDNA), Perching Places, Songbird ReMix, backing photo (Me)

Great Work! Nice to see someone render and know what they are rendering. Hate to see how man has killed off so many beautiful creatures with our own ignorance.
