Description
In perusing through my many folders of photos, I came upon this shot, captured 8/10/06, just one of several I took while hanging over the fence of my neighbor's patio in an effort to get decent shots of this handsome canine.
When I first met Buddy, he was new to the complex, and was very charming, friendly, licking my hand and cavorting about in excitement, etc., but as the days and weeks went by, he became increasingly contentious, irritable, and snappish as a result of being confined to the small patio. Beagles and others of their ilk are supposed to have a huge area to run freely about, sniffing, hunting, and doing whatever their genes have programmed them to do.
So, as a result of his forced confinement, he resorted to intermittently digging up various parts of the patio, and when he got bored with that pastime, he would vigorously howl up a storm of protest and frustration.
Incidentally, his owners were here on a lengthy visit and did try to restrain him from his destructive and noisy activities. They found the only solution to the problem was bringing him back into the unit for solace and companionship.
Anyway, these pictures were taken after I had calmed Buddy down by speaking to him in a soft civilized manner. You can see in his expression that he wasn't a very happy camper.
And now Buddy is no longer with us, having returned to the state of Georgia, where I assume he has much more land to run free and unrestrained and to do what makes him happy and content. He deserves it.
One positive note out of all this is that we in the complex don't have to be tortured by his tortured howling any longer. Ergo, there is peace and quiet in the community again.
Have a wonderful downslope to the work week!

He's got quite the look. You got that beautifully. Hounds are great manipulators...I know, I have a hound myself. I can see the absolute irritation with his "disgusting" situation in his eyes. Cool shot. Glad you dug this one out of the files.

Ooohhh...nice and in a sense touchy story of Buddy. Good to know he is life better now, he can do what he like to do without much restrection. This is a fine shot, considering a situation, shooting from over the fence. Like a nice color of his coat captured realy well.

I love beagles. A friend had a miniature girl beagle that came as a stray. The dog would sit on your lap for hours. Nothing like you describe. I am sure they all have different personalities.

This is a great(!) capture and I looooove the personality in his expression. Excellent done, GOB! And there is also a very important lesson buried in your notes. Very often, people take home a breed of dog that is unsuitable for it's environment, i.e. getting a beagle and thinking it will be a quiet lapdog...'Dogs' are a product of man's intervention with nature and were specifically 'bred' and genetically manipulated to have certain behaviors. Therefore, they should never, ever be purchased on impulse!!!!...Sorry. Just me on my soapbox, thinking about all the puppies that end up in shelters. :^( Still...it's going to my faves because this is such an adorable capture. :^)
