It works better if you remove the sun as a light source and just use the volumetric spot light.

It doesn't get much more volumetric that that. Excellent! And a good way of keeping the camera out of the light volume. Wonderful colors too - and much more contrast than one can normally get in a volumetric scene. Gotta remember this method!
