Description
New Arcadia, 37th day of Hercules, planetary year 915. It's exactly four hundred planetary years since General Watson's coup forced women out of public life. Since then, New Arcadia has been more and more a ramshackle galactic backwater.
Although the male population nominally has the vote, elections are a sham and no president since Watson has taken office by constitutional means. In fact, very few have died of natural causes, either. Well, that's one tradition that the women of the planet are happy to maintain. Armed by off-world sympathizers, they are taking control, seizing military bases, airports and the sole spaceport that remains vaguely functional.
The presidential palace is a special case, since it symbolizes the corruption and paranoia of the last four, wasted centuries. The attack on the palace is the most conspicuous of all, intentionally so. Members of F Company, Sixth Battalion, Presidential Guard, have the misfortune to be on duty and the attacker's off-world weapons are vastly superior to theirs. All of the soldiers posted outside the building are vaporised in the first few seconds; then the rebels move through the interior, sparing only the handful of lowly female staff. The president and his closest aides are intercepted as they try to reach a rooftop shuttle-pad. The shattered building is completely demolished before nightfall.
The other companies of the battalion are a bit luckier. Surrounded by female forces, they don't put up much of a fight and suffer relatively few casualties before their surrender is accepted. "You never put your voting-rights to good use," the men of the planet are told, "so you can't complain that now you no longer have any."
