Description

Left is raw Daw Studio render of what was hoped to be an underwater mermaid scene. Right is an attempt to post process image, that unfortunately to me looks much more like clouds or fog than the desired underwater environment. Any tips and suggestions on how to do beleavable underwater scenes 100% in Daz Studio, or via post work will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for viewing and for any comments you have time to give. . .

A wonderful work in progress. I look forward to seeing the next progression. I would like to see some coral on the the floor of the sea. Keep them coming.

Oh Mike... now you have me stumped! I have not done an underwater scene either. I think it looks very good! I know what you mean about the cloudiness. What about the same colour (cos thats perfect) and try a straight fog gradient with a slightly different tone of the same colour (light at the top, darker at the bottom, rather than a cloudy type fog). Superb start!!!

Nice work, Mike, underwater is very difficult to get right. The one on the right does look close - the lighting is perfect, color wise. The cloudiness does look a bit overdone - too foggy for underwater. Yet the shape of them is really good, so I'm not saying to get rid of them. I'd lighten up even more on the opacity of the cloudy parts. Keep them, but barely visible. And what about a caustic filter for one of the lights directly in Daz? Or in postwork? I know I've seen some somewhere for free... wish I could remember. I know there are a lot of free light sets at rdna, just not sure about the caustics. Try here, search for "light gels" or "caustics". They can add realism to undersea work. Just be careful , because it's easy to overdo it. What you are doing here looks like it's fairly deep undersea, so any surface reflections would be minimal, but a touch of it might help. You're really on the right track with this - keep moving forward and you'll get there.

You did a wonderful job-only know how to do it in Bryce-DS is hard because you can't add gels to the lights

Sorry Mike I wish I could help also. As Marianne said, an underwater scene is hard to do and have to work it. So far you are doing great work. Remember you will have shadows in the water, how strong will depend on the light from above, wether day or night or sunny or cloudy. Keep working on it I am sure when you are finished it will be lovely. You may want to just put it aside and then go back to it, every once in awhile so you don't get 'blinded' by it. Good luck, looking forward to the finished picture. :o)

Never tried underwater scenes purely in D/S Mike, but I,ve done them in Bryce before. Dont know if it'll work in D/S but in Bryce I use cloud and water infinate planes. So some 2d flat planes with semi transparrent and slightly reflective water images set at various angles might work. Check out this one to see what I mean. http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1076171

I find water extremely hard, so I don't even try. Good luck Mike, I am sure you will make a great render in the end.
