Description
Every year at this time it happens. The snails go on a snatching spree. It only lasts a couple of days, but no apple is safe in the forest. One minute an apple is there shiny and bright and the next it's gone. Any evidence that an apple existed, is a thin trail of slime left by the perpetrator. I know you are asking yourself, "How in the world could a snail, even a group of snails steal apples?" Aha! You don't know snails! Those slow moving little gastropods are much faster and more cunning than you know. They have it down to an expertise of snatchery that would make Fagin look like an amateur and they have two cohorts to help them in this despicable crime spree. You may remember those two lovable, but brain impaired souls, Squeaker and Scratch from the pet shop. Well, they are out and about again.
There has been an 'incident' this year that has ended the apple snatching spree early, or so I have been told. Snedley, the head honcho and brains of the snails, was caught by Millicent the Librarian. I'm told it was late in the afternoon and the library was empty. Millicent had finished all her duties and was reading the new revised Fairy Tale book to make sure it was suitable for the younger fairies, when out of the corner of her eye she saw the apple she had brought as snack, move. I might also add, this was one of the last apples in the Forest, so it was a prize. She thought it was the late afternoon light and shadows playing tricks and continued to read, then again she thought saw the apple rock back and forth. As she looked up she saw Snedley pushing her apple toward the edge of the table where Squeaker was waiting to grab it and hand it over to Scratcher who would run out of the door and down the East path to a secret hiding place.
All three culprits froze in place, hoping she wouldn't notice them. What can I say, these three aren't rocket scientists, if they were they wouldn't be snatching apples. Millicent is not one to get ruffled easily, she quickly picked up Snedley and marched down to the river. Millicent found a very large leaf and put Snedley on it and placed it on the gently flowing river. Yep, Snedley was going up the river for a while. Not to worry, he's been up many times before. He'll be back and when he does, everything will be back to normal...until next year.
Everyone in the Forest wonders why these ordinarily law biding creatures would go on a snatching spree every year at this time. It is said and remember this is only rumor, that in the fall when the air is crisp and the leaves are changing and you have a cup of wonderful Apple Cider, the kind that has a slight kick to it...need I say more? I don't know, but that's what I've been told :o) Have a great and safe week ahead
