Description
...all the livelong day,
I've been working on the railroad,
just to pass the time away...
Well, not exactly. I just happened to be crossing the tracks near my condo complex rather early one morning, when I noticed my shadow was running parallel to the direction of the tracks, which was kind of propitious, so, never one to pass up a timely opportunity, I positioned myself as shown and captured the scene above.
Actually, in retrospect, after studying this photo, I figure that if I had waited maybe five to fifteen minutes longer, then my shadow would have been perfectly parallel to the tracks. But I was under time restraints during that period and couldn't dillydally around waiting for the exact moment to take a snapshot.
In any event, if I remember, I'll try to take a similar shot, but next time around the end of December, when the sun is really low above the horizon, making my shadow appear half a block long. Hopefully, old Sol will cooperate in this endeavor by casting the shadow as parallel to the tracks as the one shown above. If not, then forget it.
Have a fabulous Friday, and a whizbang weekend!

Hey, Harry... I thought you said you don't look anything like your avatar. But your avatar boasts extremely long legs too and you seem to be just as lanky as the avatars you use... Are you sure that's not you in the avatars??? But, getting back to the photo here... I like the tall, lanky look you got and the lighting is perfect for the positioning of the shadow on the tracks...but then you already know this so I'm just repeating you... In short, I like this shot. Say, were you sure to listen for oncoming trains? Don't get so involved in setting up your train track photo that you end up getting yourself run down by a freight train headed for San Diego! That would really ruin the compo and pov... :-)

MrsLubner: The tracks run east to west for I don't know how many miles, then veer north, so if I was to be run down during my concentration on photo taking, it wouldn't be from a freight train headed for San Diego. Thanks anyway, I appreciate your concern about my safety.

Harry, you are right on track with this one. I can't help but wonder if you were inspired to post this today due to this little factoid: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap070713.html Happy Ft13th and have a grand weekend. "I'm goin' to ride this train Lord until I find out What Jimmie Rogers and the Hag was all about See I play this rock n roll and I think that's fine But I wnta to go back a little further in time I'm a hobo I know but that's the price I pay Guess I'll write me another song while I'm on my way Catch me another train and this is what I'll say Mr Choo-choo train take me away..." ~ from Railroad Song by Lynyrd Skynyrd

Uhh...guy got nailed up here last week...doing exactly what you did....he lived and probably got a pic as nice as this!

YARDOBE: Well, your guy must have been deaf as a fence post, because the horns on these slow freight trains -- which are the only type that use the tracks in this photo -- can be heard from a mile away, and they blare most loudly a couple of blocks before coming up to an intersection like the one I was standing adjacent to, at least the choo choos do that go by my neck of the woods.
