Description

This is the little Hamlet of Postbridge which gets thousands of visitors each year, there is nothing very remarkable about the place apart from the old clapper Bridge, but it is right in the middle of the National Park, and thus, an ideal place to start the tour of the wonderful moors. Clapper bridges are unique to the dartmoor area. There are 30 bridges in total on Dartmoor, being constructed in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries by medieval tin workers and farmers as crossings over the many small rivers that traverse the moorland.

A good image, with lots of distractions, though - especially the cars do little for the image.

Several years ago I wrote a book that begins in England with a horseback as well as carriage ride through Dartmoor and through the moors, but I never really had a clear picture of it until seeing this. Thanks for sharing this unique landscape. CC

I can imagine trying to cross one during icy weather.must be treacherous.beautiful area and capture a fine example is to be found at Postbridge, on Dartmoor. Its slabs are over four metres (13ft) long, two metres (6ft 6in) wide and weigh over eight tons each, making the bridge passable to a small cart. It was first recorded in 1380 and was built to facilitate the transportation of tin by pack horses to the stannary town of Tavistock.

Well I would say that the remarkable thing about this town is your capture of it. You've brought a feeling of slow, small village life to this with a sense of hard work and appreciation for the land that goes with it. Great shot!

Not bad Dan, not great but not bad. I REALLY don't like your signature, I reckon your point with it is 'DON'T STEAL MY IMAGE'. What's wrong? I think the walls are too washed and the rest of the image is flat. Looks like you shot it is winter, so I can forgive the lack of green :)

Gosh this is pretty; and you know, I hate saying anything negative to anyone; but after reading what Orchidman said, about the cars...maybe cloning the bushes all along that edge to hide the cars? I don't know... just my 2 cents. I love the shot Danny ... :)

I got my first sense of what you are talking about in Cades Cove in Smokey Mountains National Park. I had a new movie camera and people were living on 99 year leases from before the park was created. No longer was a National Park a place of just organic landscape.
