Description

Another shot from yesterday's hike, this one from about a half hour farther up the hill. Looking downstream this time, the inverted cone across the river is Wind Mountain, apparently the only granitic object in the Gorge. Except for this intrusion, everything else is basalt. The little triangular lake is Grant Lake; it's just where the railroad went straight instead of around a bay where a tributary joins the Columbia. Between the lake and the mountain is an ancient landslide. Because of the angles of the layers of basalt, most waterfalls are on the Oregon side, and most of the landslides are on the Washington side. I don't want to turn this into a Geology class, so I'll stop now. :-)

Nooooooooo!!! Don't stop now, it was just getting interesting! I love geology, but don't have the training to figure that stuff out for myself. But show me a picture and tell me what I'm looking at, and I'll ask you questions all day! sigh I'll take what I can get. Thank you very much for the wonderful photo and the geology lesson! (And that's a mighty pretty State you're lookin' at there!) :)

The tree really adds to this, both color-wise and visually. Very nice long view and I also like the geology information.
