Description

While traveling through Germany (outside of Baligen, southwest of Stuttgart) we saw this 'Castle in the Sky'. It is situated on the highest peak and can be seen for many kilometers. We stopped and took some pictures at two different locations but did not actually visit. Turns out, it is open to the public and if we had turned left instead of right, we would have driven right up to the front gates. It is Burg Hohenzollern and is one of the most famous castles in Germany (I really must do my homework before I travel and not after). It was originally built in the 10th century and has been rebuilt a few times since then due to sieges, wars etc. The current building was reconstructed in the 1800's and currently holds many valuable artifacts from the region's history.
